Curt Schmidt ended a four-year victory drought in tournament play when he won the $70,000 Fair Lanes Open. Schmidt upset top-seeded Dave Davis, 246-163, in the title game at Towson, a Baltimore suburb, for his first victory since Toledo, Ohio in 1972. Davis was one of two opponents Schmidt toppled to win the $8,000 first prize. In the semi-final match of the nationally televised finals, the Hoosier ousted Ernie Schlegel, U.S.A., 196-192. According to Schmidt, the victory over Schlegel was the most Important one. Schlegel had eliminated Billy Hardwick, 256-197, and then Bobby Jacks, 225-214.
