Earl Anthony's victory in the $50,000 Waukegan Open was his toughest and most thrilling of the season. After tying Matt Surina, Longview, Wash., at 257 in the title game, Anthony salted away four consecutive strikes in a two-frame rolloff to win his sixth Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title of the year. The issue was in doubt all the way even though Anthony built up a 22-pin lead by the sixth frame thanks to a string of strikes that started in the third frame and carried through the ninth. Surina also got a string going, from the seventh through the 10th, finishing with a 257 and forcing Anthony to get nine pins, a spare and strike to win. Anthony got the nine pins, converted the spare, and then left a seven pin on his final ball for a game-tying 257.
