Holman Marshals Victory

Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore., survived one of the highest scoring PBA tournaments ever to win the $50,000 Fresno Open.

In the position round game, the winner of which would claim the title, Holman up-ended veteran Carmen Salvino, Chicago, Ill., 279-213, to earn the $5,000 first prize.

Holman averaged 237-plus for the 42 games of qualifying and match game competition. Ten players rolled perfect games, and there were six 299 games. In 1971 at South Bend, Indiana, the pros rolled eleven perfect games for a record.

In the title game, Holman opened with seven strikes against Salvino before sparing and striking out.
