Palmer Fallgren, a 24-year-old bachelor from Sacramento, Calif., won his first national title by defeating top-seeded Gary Dickinson, Ft. Worth, Texas, 215-161, in the championship game of the $50,000 San Jose Open. The victory was a long time coming for Fallgren, who joined the tour when he was 19 years old. He has been a consistent casher on the national tour, but, as he told newsmen "this is the best." Fallgren trailed Dickinson, and was just ahead of Don Johnson, Las Vegas, Nev., Tom Hudson, Akron, Ohio, and Bobby Knipple, Long Beach, Calif., when the Home Box Office televised finals got underway. The Californian had won 19 and tied two of his 24 games of match play to garner the spot just behind Dickinson, who virtually had made a runaway of the qualifying and match game competition for 42 games.
