Sal Bongiorno, Hollywood, Fla., was top-seeded into the finals of the $50,000 Portland Open and he withstood a closing assault by many-time champion Larry Laub, San Francisco Calif., to win the tournament. He defeated the Californian in the championship game, 217-204, to win $5,000, easily his biggest check ever as a pro bowler. Bongiorno didn't get to the top of the field until there was only one game remaining in qualifying and match game play. Until that time, he watched Jim Godman, Vero Beach, Fla., and Tommy Hudson, Akron, Ohio, battle for the lead, with the Akronite wresting it away from Godman after the first day and then holding it virtually till the finish. In the position round game Tuesday night, Bongiorno finally caught Hudson with a 268-216 victory and that gave him the top-seeded position.
