Victories over Earl Anthony, Tacoma, Wash., and Jay Robinson, Los Angeles, Calif., gave Don Helling, St. Louis, Mo., his fourth career title as he captured the $80,000 Monroe Max-Air Open. Helling, who had gained one other title at Pelican Lanes, defeated Anthony, 265-226, before disposing of the top-seeded Robinson, 237-213, in the championship match. Despite his two-game average of 251, Helling's victories were not exactly easy. He got the first seven strikes against Anthony, but Earl stayed close enough that Helling had to double in the 10th to win. Against Robinson, he strung together five strikes to build a lead Robinson couldn't catch.
