Victory for Barry Asher in the opening tournament of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Winter Tour, the $60,000 ARC Alameda Open, was a sharp reverse from his performance in the early part of 1974 when he was recovering from an illness which threw his game sharply off form. The Costa Mesa, Calif., pro not only ousted three opponents during the nationally televised finals, but he came from 23rd place tie just to make it into the finals. Asher eliminated Bill Spigner, Hamden, Conn., Fred Conner, Mar Vista, Cal., and Mickey Higham, Kansas City, Mo., in order, with Higham being the victim in the championship game, 236-186.
