Dave Soutar accomplished a rare feat and broke a 14-month victory drought by winning the $50,000 Home Box Office Open in Buffalo, N.Y. The lanky veteran of 13 years on the pro tour topped Carmen Salvino, 190-184, in the title game for his first victory since the Portland Open in June, 1973. Soutar just made it into the 24-man finals, gaining the last spot in the field. But at the end of the first eight games of match play he had moved up the ladder to fifth place with a 7-1 won-loss record, and from there he stayed m the top five for the remainder of the head-to-head competition. In the championship game, Soutar suffered an opening-frame split and dropped 11 pins behind. But Salvino got a split in the third frame and hen a disastrous 4-6 split in the seventh frame. That finished Salvino, even though his three game-ending strikes forced Soutar to mark to clinch the title.
