Bourdase Day In Seattle
Ed Bourdase, fiery veteran from Mountain View Calif., kept cool long enough to grab first place in the $45,000 Seattle Open Bowling Tournament, hosted for a ninth consecutive year at Ballinger Bowl.
Bourdase no longer a full-time performer on the tour, amassed a 61-pin lead midway in his championship game against Matt Surina, then saw the gap close almost completely when Surina rung up three strikes, while Bourdase failed to convert the seven pin for an easy spare in the ninth frame.
Faced then with a loss to his much younger opponent, Bourdase rallied with three strikes in the tenth frame to finally nail down the $5,000 first place prize, Surina, thwarted in his bid for a third PBA title, took away $2,800 after losing by a 247-202 count.
Surina held the hot hand coming into the finale of the four-match windup. He drubbed three straight foes en route, whipping in order, Gary Dickinson Barry Asher, and Curt Schmidt. A statistical oddity was that Asher went into the battle with eight campionships while each of te other four had won twice in pro bowling play. Surina, who was to total 908 for four games-a 227 average-shot games of 245, 225 and 236 before slipping to 202 in the crucial match against the eventual winner.
The event produced fine scoring throughout, with highlights being a 300 game by Don Johnson, Akron, O., and two high-scoring deadlocks in the man-against-man phase. One of those was a 268-268 standoff between Asher and Bourdase, while in the final block of matches Tim Harahan, Canoga Park, Cal., and Larry Laub, Santa Rosa, Cal., tossed 278 games at each other.
