Colwell Topples Four

Paul Colwell, Tucson, Ariz., became the second professional bowler in as many weeks to win four games before a national television audience when he won the $55,000 New Orleans Lions Open.

He topped Bowler of the Year Don McCune, 213-179, in the championship game. Just a week earlier Alex Seymore Kannapolis, N.C., won the STP Classic by also defeating four opponents in the finals.

The 24-year-old former Air Force sergeant found himself against some veteran troopers after he posted an 18-6 mark in match-game play to get into the finals field. McCune had won the top-seeded position; Dick Ritger was second then came all-time leading money winner Dick Weber, and just a notch behind Colwell was Gary Dickinson. Colwell's four opponents had won 49 PBA titles among them.
