Larry Laub successfully protected his top-seeded spot as he won the $60,000 Cleveland Open, topping Earl Anthony, in the championship game, 257-247, to win the $7,000 first prize. To win it, Laub was forced to open with a seven-bagger against Anthony, who came on with a rush only to fall short by 10 pins at the finish, thus choking off a superlative four-game effort by Anthony. Anthony rolled a 1020 total for four games, just one pin off the mark for four television games set, oddly enough, by Laub. Included in his effort was a 299 in the first game against Johnny Petraglia, Brooklyn, N.Y. Anthony left a nine-pin on his last ball. Anthony recovered to defeat Roy Buckley, Columbus, Ohio, and Butch Gearhart, Houston, Texas, before challenging Laub.
