McGrath Repeats In Hawaii
Mike McGrath successfully defended his Winston-Salem Invitational Championship in Honolulu, Hawaii by defeating Earl Anthony, in the payoff game, 247-218, at Bowling City. The finale was almost a replay from a year ago, when McGrath won the title and Anthony finished third after sustaining a defeat by McGrath. The victory was the third of the year for McGrath, who captured the $75,000 BPAA U.S. Open at New York last winter and the $47,500 Home Box Office Open at Pennsville, N.J. in the summer. It also was his 10th career victory. Islanders were treated to an outstanding exhibition of tournament bowling by the Mainland pros. During the qualifying sessions, Bobby Cooper rolled a 300 game the first one rolled by the pros in five years in Hawaii, and Gary Dickinson had a 299 in the finals. Jay Robinson shot a 299 during qualifying. The ournament marked the second year in a row that 16 Mainland pros journeyed to Hawaii under the sponsorship of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
