Japan Gold Cup McCune's 6th
Don McCune had to go a long way to get it . . . Tokyo, Japan, to be exact . . . but he returned home with his sixth victory of the year on the Professional Bowlers Association 1973 tournament tour. The Indianan struck three times in the 10th frame of the championship game to eke out a 236-235 victory over another Hoosier, Curt Schmidt, Ft. Wayne. Using the PBA's step-ladder elimination format, McCune eliminated two other finalists before laying claim to the crown and the $2,000 first prize money. He was third at the end of four days of match-game qualifying play, trailing Schmidt and Barry Asher. When McCune swung into action in the televised portion of the finals, he first met Roy Buckley, and disposed of him, 244-225. Next up was Asher and McCune hung a 258-225 defeat on the Californian. In the championship match with Schmidt, the two pros were pin-for-pin virtually throughout the game, with McCune holding a one-pin margin after striking in the eighth and ninth frames. Schmidt then struck out, and by so doing he forced McCune to do the same thing in the 10th frame to maintain that one-pin margin. McCune responded with a pressure-packed three-bagger and it was all over. TELEVISED FINALS
