The $55,000 Winston-Salem Open, first tournament on the summer tour, became the third bauble in Don McCune's crown this year when he defeated Roy Buckley, Columbus, Ohio, 212-204, in the championship game at Brunswick Wonderbowl in Downey, Calif. Previously McCune had won the $90,000 Winston-Salem Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C., which also was sponsored by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He also won the $80,000 Miller High Life Open last winter. McCune ousted three opponents under the PBA's stepladder elimination format to win the crown. The format was in use for the first time as Home Box Office, Inc., a subscription television programmer, beamed the finals to an eastern audience in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
