Colwell Does It Again

Just two weeks after taking his initial championship, Paul Colwell stormed right back to take title No. 2 in the Houston Sertoma Open at Stadium Bowl. It marked Colwell's fifth cashing appearance in only five 1972 outings and it also stamped the youngster as one of the rising stars.

Colwell's victim in Houston was a hometown favorite, Jack Biondolillo, who had led the tournament virtually from the start but who surrendered the lead to Colwell in the final rounds of match game play.

Going into those final eight games Jack led Colwell by 22 pins. Both players lost their first game, then Colwell defeated Bill Johnson, 147-190, and Biondolillo dropped a disastrous 203-154 game to Joe Dignam, Seattle, Wash. That gave Colwell the lead which he held to the end. He clinched it in the position-round championship game by defeating Biondolillo, 109-207.

Skee Foremsky, another Houstonian and one of six in the 24-man finals, made the biggest jump of the tournament. His 17-7 record in the match play finals lifted him from 20th place to third at the finish.
