Don Helling saved his best effort for last in the finals of the Andy Granatelli's STP Classic, ousting Don Glover from the top spot for his third PBA title. In the championship game Helling rang up a 238-206 victory, which wasn't quite as easy as it looked, over Glover, who had wrested the top seeded spot from Helling Friday night. The two were within several pins of each other until Helling uncorked five strikes on his last six balls. Glover had won the top-seeded spot at Pelican Lanes after a to-and-fro battle with Helling Friday night. The lead changed hands after virtually every game until Glover, faced with a 12-pin deficit going into the position round game, opened that match with seven strikes in a row and rang up a 46-188 victory over Helling.
