Butch Gearhart captured his fourth championship in the rich and important Winston-Salem Classic when he turned the tables on Roy Buckley, 216-169, in the title contest. A few months before, Buckley had edged Butch in another R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company event at Cranston, R.I. The $10,000 triumph was Gearhart's most lucrative since he joined the tour on a full-time basis a few years prior. He did it the hard way, coming up with clutch doubles in the fifth and sixth, as well as the eighth and ninth when Buckley left the door open with a fatal fifth frame split. The TV cast also included such feared performers as Nelson Burton, Jr., Bill Beach and Dave Davis, with none of them able to win more then one match, after Burton opened the show by losing to Beach.
