Bill Beaches A Big One

Bill Beach, a part-time tour competitor, won his first PBA title ever by outlasting 22-year-old Butch Soper, Tustin, Calif., 215-202 in the championship game of the Dun Carter Classic. The win gave Beach $7,500 and also a spot in the Firestone Tournament of Champions.

Beach was seeded third after winning his spot during the match play finals. Soper had most of the hometown fans cheering for him and he jumped off to a 19-pin lead. Beach bounced back with a four-bagger, from the fourth through the seventh frames, then converted a "must" spare and a strike in the ninth and tenth frames to clinch the title.
