Johnson Takes The Fifth In Detroit
Don Johnson captured the 16th title in his career and fifth of the season in the $50,000 Bellows-Valvair Open in Detroit. Though he had a comfortable margin at the end over runnerup Dave Davis, it was a nip and tuck affair most of the tournament, with several among the 24-man finals field taking dead aim at the first place position.
When he tossed a 278 in the final game of the second of three eight-game match game blocks, Johnson was on his way. Though he dropped half of his final set, Don took an unbeatable lead into the last game-which he won, 237-223, over Davis. When the final reckoning was made, Don had a victory margin of 264 pins as he took the $6,000 first place prize at Hartfield Lanes.
