Gunner Brings Back A Mercury
Victory number six in PBA competition was relatively easy for Johnny Guenther, a veteran pro out of Seattle,Wash. Guenther moved quickly to the lead in the qualifying segment, then surrendered his advantage only once-during match play-as he drove off with the first place prize, a new Mercury Marquis.
Going into the final block of eight games, the Gunner's margin was still shaky but he opened with a 299 game, tookseven of eight, and was an easy victor over runnerup Dick Weber. For the 42-game route, the winner went at a 228 clip, took 19 of 24 match games, and wound up the event with a flourish, whipping Weber, 233-219. In addition to Guenther, Weber and third-placer Curt Schmidt were awarded cars by the sponsoring Lincoln-Mercury people.
