Don Helling of St. Louis defeated one of the best in the game he had to win and as a result is champion of the 1971 Portland, Ore., Open: Helling tripped Dave. Soutar, 210-182, in the position round game to clinch victory and win his way back into the Firestone T of C. Despite Helling's margin at the finish, his triumph was not an easy one. He had led the 18-game qualifying test with a 219 pins-per-game average but then fell behind Soutar in the second round of match game finals play, when Soutarwon seven of eight games to take over the lead. However, in the final eight games of match play, Soutar did a complete about face, losing seven of eight games, while Helling's steady play enabled him to go into the final round with a 24-pin lead over Soutar. Soutar left two 8-10 splits in the championship game, and Helling had his victory, his first since he won the Plainville (Conn.) Jaycee Open in 1967. | | | Name, City/State | | Pins | | WLT | | + | | Tot | | Amt | | | 1 | | Don Helling, St. Louis, Mo. | | 9068 | | 15-9-0 | | 460 | | 9618 | | $4,000 | | 2 | | Bobby Cooper, Houston, Texas | | 8933 | | 16-8-0 | | 480 | | 9413 | | 2,200 | | 3 | | Dave Davis, Miami, Fla. | | 8957 | | 15-9-0 | | 460 | | 9407 | | 1,500 | | 4 | | Dave Soutar, Gilroy, Calif. | | 8986 | | 14-10-0 | | 420 | | 9406 | | 1,200 | | 5 | | Johnny Petraglia, Brooklyn, N.Y. | | 8860 | | 16-9-0 | | 450 | | 9310 | | 1,100 | | 6 | | Earl Anthony, Tacoma, Wash. | | 8905 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9296 | | 1,000 | | @7 | | Larry Turner, Eugene, Ore. | | 8833 | | 15-9-0 | | 450 | | 9283 | | 960 | | 8 | | Mike McGrath, El Cerrito, Calif. | | 8970 | | 10-14-0 | | 300 | | 9270 | | 900 | | 9 | | Bob Hood, San Francisco, Calif. | | 8875 | | 12-12-0 | | 360 | | 9236 | | 850 | | 10 | | Jim Godman, Lorain, Ohio | | 8833 | | 13-11-0 | | 390 | | 9223 | | 800 | | 11 | | Curt Schmidt, Ft.
