Johnny Petraglia's third victory of the year-and second in a row--came at the expense of Gary Dickinson in the Don Carter Classic, held at Pelican Lanes in New Orleans. Petraglia pocketed $7,500 for eliminating Dickinson, who was striving for his first PBA triumph. The score was 223-192 and the loser's undoing were splits in the fifth and eighth frames after the two had been knotted through four frames. The event, cosponsored by Ebonite and the Lions Clubs of New Orleans, produced thrilling matches and in each case Dickinson was the man who caused the most noise as he almost went all the way. He rolled over Don Helling, Curt Schmidt and Mike McGrath, by respective scores of 201-180, 236-205 and 267-212, before confronting Petraglia. John, however, was not to be denied. Although not a high-scoring event, the Don Carter Classic did see one perfect game tossed, that by Bud Horn.
