Johnny Petraglia tripped Earl Anthony in the championship game of the inaugural Fair Lanes Open, a $60,000 event held just outside Washington, D.C., to gain his second title of the year. The final game score was 204-197 as the winner joined Dick Weber and Dave Soutar as a two-time titlist for 1971. Petraglia, the leader by a wide margin after 40 games at Fair Lanes, in Springfield, Va., still had to win one more game to grab the $7,000 winner's purse. The opening match saw. Bob Strampe top Jack Biondolillo, 209-194. Then, Strampe rolled over Dick Battista, 221-210. Anthony, trying for his second straight championship, got by Strampe, 224-214, then went up against the tough lefthander from Brooklyn. Down by 13 pins, "Rags" started his comeback and passed his foe in the sixth frame. When he struck in the final frame he clinched victory.
