With a crowd of nearly 4,000 fans looking on-the largest turnout ever to see the finals of a PBA tournament-Earl Anthony, the talented pro from Tacoma, Wash., made the $85,000 Cougar Open his second championship. Earl's victory, worth $10,000, plus a new automobile fom the co-sponsoring Lincoln-Mercury people, came at the expense of Roy Buckley. The finals of the Cougar were held in the Felt Forum, at New York's Madison Square Garden on two specially-installed lanes. The exciting windup began with Allie Clarke downing Johnny Petraglia, 186-170. Then, Anthony notched a 205-194 triumph over Clarke and a 201-194 over Mike Orlovsky. The payoff match saw Buckley blow his chances at his first crown with splits in the first and fifth frames.
