A battle between two young lefthanders, in the first annual Winston-Salem Classic, ended with Johnny Petraglia downing Larry Lichstein, winner two weeks before in San Jose, by a 202-196 count., Petraglia's ninth frame strike and last frame spare were the ingredients that earned for him $10,000 and launched the southpaw on a season that was to become the greatest any bowler had ever had. Third going into the finals, Petraglia had to capture three matches, and he performed the task grittily. Initially, he topped Mike McGrath, 192-174, after McGrath had downed Jimmy McHugh, 247-186. Then, Petraglia edged Curt Schmidt, 216-201, before entering the title match. The tournament, sponsored by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., drew excellent crowds and saw hundreds of bowlers participating in the Pro-Am, which got the festive week under way.
