Dave Soutar, hottest bowler on the tour in the waning weeks of 1970, wasted little time in winning his first title of the 1971 season. The angular pro, much the best over the 40-game route leading to the TV finale, had too much armament in the windup. Dave's victim-by a 235-210 count-was Dick Ritger, who made the payoff tilt when he disposed of Barry Asher by a whopping 270-234. For Asher, it was the third straight week in the finals. Soutar took 13 of his match games, easily the best showing in that department. And, his 9155 actual pinfall likewise was tops. Dave's 234 in the game which earned for him the winner's check of $6,000 was in keeping with the 234 average posted by all finalists. There was one 300 game in the event, that by Vern Downing in the qualifying phase.
