Don Johnson's first triumph of the season was a whopper. In moving from third place to victory in the Showboat Invitational-once again a $77,777.77 event-Don overcame three opponents, the clincher being a 269-223 win over top-seeded Barry Asher. Totaling 734 for his three games-an average of 244-the veteran righthander had to be good, for all participants in the TV finals were at the top of their game, all shooting 200 or better. The Showboat Lanes provided ideal scoring conditions, as witness three 300 games and a championship round that saw Dick Weber down Allie Clarke, 247-228; Johnson rip Weber 257-203 and Johnny Petraglia, 208-203 and then Johnson tripping eight straight strikes to vanquish Asher in the finale that returned $11,111.11 to the winner. Asher earned $7,777.77 and each of the perfect games-by Asher, Clarke and Don McCune-were rewarded with $100, courtesy of the host Showboat.
