Dave Soutar didn't relent as the PBA caravan moved into Detroit for the American Airlines Open. He just added to his incredible streak by winning his fifth title of the year and once again the victim in a championship game was Dave Davis. Soutar took all nine match games in the opening session of the finals, making up a huge deficit of 300 pins owned by Davis. Then, in the evening block, Soutar captured four more for a string of 13 and only then did he drop one, this to Tommy Tuttle. The position round game was meaningless, what with the huge lead Soutar had built up, and Soutar succumbed by a 247-159 count. Victory was worth another $6,000 to the winner, who took his 10th career championship. Third place went to Don Glover, who tossed a final game 279 to win that spot from Mike McGrath. The event's only 300 game was contributed by Johnny Guenther.
