Four perfect games and the thrilling battle waged by Dave Soutar and Nelson Burton Jr. were the high spots of the Bellows-Valvair tournament, which held forth at Dick Weber Lanes in St. Louis. There were 300s by Bobby Knipple, Jim Vrenick, Dale Glenn and Soutar in early play and if you don't think the huge throngs appreciated the excitement, then you weren't there. Going into the payoff game, Soutar held a 68-pin margin over Burton, seeking his fifth victory of the year. Burton needed a 19-pin victory to take the $5,000 prize, but fell two short, winning the 40th and final game, 235-219. It gave Soutar his third victory on the tour and it boosted Burton to a near-record pinfall of 9,462 pins for 40 games, 73 more than spilled by the winner. There was an avalanche of high games in the event and attesting to the high-scoring condition was the fact that Norm Meyers averaged 211 to hit the last cash spot-42nd place.
