Schmidt Had A Winning Way
The ingredients were all there for a memorable windup to the Blue Mountain Open in picturesque Wind Gap, Pa. When the numbers one and two men stepped onto the approach for the payoff game each knew that the title that was in the offing was to be his first. The pressure was tremendous and it may or may not have had an effect on the outcome in the duel between Roy Buckley and Curt Schmidt. Schmidt, out of Ft. Wayne, Ind., had battled his way, back from ninth place to the position where a victory over leader Buckley would give him his first PBA crown. They stayed reasonably close to each other until fate stepped in and cost a Buckley a key spare in the ninth frame. Schmidt then drilled home four straight strikes to gain victory by a 203-188 tally. In losing, Buckley dropped to third, two pins behind Johnny Guenther, who gained the second place shot with a last-game 207-179 win over Gary Mage, Seattle, who finished fifth behind Allie Clarke of Akron, Ohio. Leader of the qualifier was Jack Biondolillo, trying to win his way back into the Firestone T of C, and the only 300 game of the competition was turned in by Dale Seavoy, veteran righthander from Birmingham, Mich.
