Dave Soutar, who has done many things throughout his long and illustrious pro bowling career, really outdid himself in the Waukegan Open. Leader after 12 games, Soutar relinquished the top spot to various pros through the next dozen games. Then, after a dismal 2-7 record in the opening block of the finals dropped him to 12th place, Dave started the long road back. He took five of his first six and came up to the 40th tilt as the leader once again against Don Johnson, winner of the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Johnson could have taken the crown with a big victory, but bowed, 243-204, to Soutar. When Butch Gearhart pinned a 279-265 defeat on Johnny Petraglia, it dropped Johnson three notches into fifth spot. At the finish, it was Petraglia, Gearhart, Larry Lichstein and Johnson, in that order. Another casualty of the match games was Mike McGrath, who took all nine games in Round One of the finals to grab the lead, but fell all the way to eighth when he dropped his final six games of the tournament.
