Record crowds and great bowling were the ingredients all week long as the Don Carter Classic-a $60,000 event-debuted at New York City's Madison Square Garden. A turnaway crowd saw homebred Mike Limongello snare the $7,500 first-place prize when he toppled Mike McGrath, 228-192, in the final game. The presence of those two youngsters, plus rookie Earl Anthony and all-time greats Harry Smith and Dick Weber, in the five-man finals made this event a memorable one in its inaugural. In the opener, Weber defeated Smith, making the TV show for the first time in five years, 227-199. Earlier in the competition, Smith rolled a 300 game. Then, Weber bowed to Anthony, 246-192, before McGrath edged Anthony in a two-pin squeaker, 200-198. Limongello closed out his game against McGrath with five in a row to earn the winner's check, plus the championship trophy, awarded by the man for whom the event was named.
