If anyone had their doubts about George Pappas and his ability to hold his own with the world's best bowlers, it was dispelled in the Greater Buffalo Open. The leader after three days of bowling, George drew the top spot in the televised finals and when his time came, Pappas dropped a 227-196 bomb on Bill Johnson, who came from fifth place and was just one win away from the championship and $6,000. Johnson tossed 21 strikes as he quelled Don McCune, 226-223, in a thriller; Mike McGrath, 213-188, and then Tommy Tuttle, 247-216. Against Pappas, who was to go on to take his second crown in four weeks, Johnson came up with only three strikes and was deprived of his second PBA title.
