"Bo" Bowls 'Em Over

Nelson Burton Jr., who had knocked at the door one week before in San Jose, walked right through in Denver. He won three games, including a payoff ($6,000) victory over top-seeded Jim Stefanich, 203-175.

Third after the qualifier, which saw him win 11 games in the head-to-head segment, Burton took over after Bud Horn eliminated Johnny Petraglia, 236-194. Burton disposed of Horn, 248-194, despite the fact that Bud closed with eight strikes in a row against Petraglia and opened with two more against Bo. Burton's next foe was local entrant Dick Stark of Glenwood Springs, Colo., who thrilled local fans with his third-place finish after some clutch bowling all week, including a 266-233 triumph over Billy Hardwick in the final game of the semis.

Unable to untrack himself, however, in the clutch game with Burton, Stark fell by the wayside, 232-160, setting up the Burton-Stefanich confrontation for the championship.
