Bourdase Finally Captures One

Ten years and a couple hundred tournaments after it all started, Ed Bourdase finally captured his first championship. And, he did it like a champion, coming through with three straight strikes in the final frame to defeat Brooklyn's Johnny Petraglia, 201-182.

The latter battled his way to the payoff spot by downing three straight opponents-Mickey Higham, 188-175, Dale Seavoy, 184-175, and Bob Strampe, 211-193. In the finale, Bourdase threatened to make a runaway of the match when he struck four times in the first five frames. However, splits in the sixth and eighth boxes left the door wide open for Petraglia. Johnny recorded a ninth frame strike to put it squarely up to "Boards" and Ed came through for the $6,000 first-place prize.

Dave Soutar notched the tournament's only 300, when he rolled 12 straight strikes in the pro-am which preceded actual competition.
