$40,000 MERCURY OPEN
Dick Weber Lanes, St. Louis, Mo., Oct 22-25, 1969
Godman's A Jim-Dandy
JIM GODMAN registered his first victory since the $100,000 Tournament of Champions in April when he beat out 127 other pro bowlers in the Mercury Open at Dick Weber Lanes in St. Louis. The triumph was most gratifying for the 23-year-old for the Godmans only recently had moved from Hayward, Calif., to Elkhart, Ind.
The slender Godman turned the tournament into a virtual rout in the match game phase, after leading the qualifying test easily. He started off by whipping Pat Patterson, 267-212, and then went on to take seven of his first nine games. His average over that span was 227. In that same block, Dave Davis went from ninth to second and was the only one with a chance at catching Godman when the evening's action began. In the position round, however, Davis bowed to Bluth while Patterson was edging Godman.
