Burton Star Of Five-Star
NELSON BURTON, JR. had to come from behind to pick up the marbles at the Five-Star Open in Cranston, R. I. Trailing by 57 pins, going into the position round, Burton defeated Billy Hardwick, 213-197, and the 50 bonus pins awarded for his victory allowed him to register a title-taking nine-pin margin.
Larry Lichstein finished third behind Hardwick, only 16 pins back of the winner.
Burton's victory stymied Hardwick's bid for his sixth tourney victory of the year. Hardwick also was thwarted by a so-so 8-8-0 match game record after he led the qualifier with a 5210 total.
Pro-Am Cashers ($50)-Dale Seavoy, Dick Weber, Don Lemon, Les Zikes, Dick Battista, Jim Stefanich. 24-Game Qualifying Leader-Hardwick, 5210. 16th Low-Jim Certain, 4891. *Alternate.
