Akron's Clarke Clicks
The PBA was founded in Akron, Ohio. But not since 1962, when Dick Hoover won the Baltimore Open, have the "hometown" fans had anything to cheer about. ALLIE CLARKE, born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and now rolling out of Akron, changed that in the Portland Open.
Clarke defeated Larry Lichstein, 224-189, in the final round to capture his first pro championship. As Clarke was posting his win, on an adjoining pair of lanes, Mike McGrath was eking out a 227-225 win over Butch Gearhart, and when the nailbiting was over, it was Clarke, McGrath, Gearhart and Lichstein, in that order.
