WAYNE ZAHN of Atlanta, undaunted by Dick Weber's 17-strike move into the championship round, opened the 1969 campaign by tallying title No. 1 in the West Valley Open at Los Angeles (Canoga Park), Calif.

Zahn, seeded No. 1, opened with four strikes and closed with five as he overpowered Weber, 256-225, in the championship finale. Weber had rolled 17 strikes in eliminating Tim Harahan, the local favorite, and veteran Buzz Fazio.

First 300 game of the season was rolled by rookie Bob Fliegman.
