Rookie In Spotlight

Don Helling, bowling in only his third professional tournament, rolled a 300 game and won the $30,500 Plainville Jaycees Open.

The six-foot lefthander averaged 215 as he led the 24-game qualifier with 5,160 pins. Helling won 11 of his 16 games in the finals in posting a 45-pin margin over a local entry, Larry Lichstein. It was the highest finish of the year for a local bowler.

Leading money winner Dave Davis finished fifth for an $1,100 check which raised his earnings for the year to $43,965.
