Schissler Sharp At Portland
Les Schissler, of Denver, was in the hottest streak of his career. He proved it by winning the Portland Open.
Schissler's $3,000 first-place check brought his winnings for the year to $26,455, a career high for him. At this point he had won the BPAA All-Star, had a third, fourth and two fifths to his credit.
Bill Starnes, a Eugene, Ore. school teacher, led the 24-game qualifier, the first time a local entry had paced the field. But Schissler pumped in 13 straight victories in the head-to-head competition to haul in the top prize.
At that, the stocky Denver pro had to defeat Lou Scalia in the position round.
Jimmy Certain moved into second place and Scalia dropped to third.
