Mike Durbin, of Costa Mesa, Calif., scored a two-pin (200-198) victory over Jimmy Mack to win his first PBA championship in the Tampa Bay-Sertoma Open and a spot in the $100,000 Firestone Tournament of Champions. Durbin, who qualified in the No. 1 spot with a one-pin (205-204) win over Mack the night before, finished his tenth frame of the championship match seemingly on the short end of the count. But Mack, needing only a nine-pin count, got seven. In the nationally televised finals, Les Schissler defeated Don Glover, 219-174; Don Johnson took Schissler, 220-170, and Mack eliminated Johnson, 203-200.
