Johnson Loses Portland Field

Don Johnson came within one victory of setting a new PBA record when he won 14 of 16 matches in the finals on his way to wrapping up the $27,500 Portland Open.

Johnson won eight of his first nine and coasted from there as he built a 275 pin lead over second place Johnny Guenther. It was Johnson's second PBA title. He won the Denver Open in 1964.

Mickey McMahon shot the first 300 game of the year on the PBA tour. Vern Downing was one pin short of perfection in another highlight of the tourney.
