Dick Weber celebrated his being named "Bowler of the Year" for the third time by capturing his 16th PBA tournament title in the $35,000 Denver Open. Weber defeated his "roomy" Ray Bluth, 247-206, in the match for the $5,000 first prize. Bluth had worked his way into the finale by eliminating Ed Bourdase, 225-160, after a 266-228 win over Dave Soutar. Weber was in the driver's seat most of the way through the first 40 games. He finished the preliminaries with a 9370 total. This included 600 bonus pins he collected for winning 12 of his 16 matches in the semifinals. Bourdase was second with 9293 going into the four-game televised set. The Denver tourney had the highest number of amateur entries in the history of the PBA when 402 turned out for the pro-am.
