John Guenther made his first PBA tournament triumph a real one when he set two world records on his way to the title in the Oxnard, Calif. Open. Both of Guenther's marks were recorded in the finals. He rolled 2022 for one eight-game block and came back with 1808 for a 16-game total of 3830. These bettered Ray Bluth's performances of 1983 and 3793 hung up at Seattle in 1964. It was all Guenther at the end as his margin of victory read 498 pins. The new champ's total was 9863 for 40 games. This included 600 bonus pins he received for winning 12 of his 16 games in the finals. Dave Soutar was second with 9365.
