Carmen Salvino "died a thousand deaths" before rallying to win the Birmingham Open. "I couldn't make up my mind whether I wanted this one or not," was the way Salvino explained his up and down performance. Salvino got off to a bad start and then came strong to lead the 24-game qualifier. The big Chicago native lost his first five match games to drop to fifth place in the finals. He recovered with games of 268, 243 and 277 to move back into the title picture. Salvino then won six of his last seven games and took a 94-pin lead over Ted Hoffman into the last game. Hoffman almost overhauled the seven-time PBA champ by scoring a 217-182 win. The runner-up finished only nine pins behind.
