The PBA Salt Lake City Open was no contest as Lefthander Dave Davis shot 257 in his opening game and then, more or less, lapped the field in racking up a 298-pin victory. Over the 40-game route, Davis shot only three games under 200 in amassing a 9399 total. This included 600 bonus pins he received for winning 12 of 16 matches in the finals. This was Dave's first major tournament trophy. His best previous finish in a PBA event was a second at Seattle in 1964. Bud Horn was second with 9101 and Jerry McCoy finished in the No. 3 slot with 8978.
