Bob Strampe, the "Golden Boy" of the year before, returned to the winner's circle for the first time in 1965 with a victory in the Continental Open at Detroit. Strampe, "Bowler of the Year" in 1964, was in luck in his home town as he eked out a one-pin (190-189) win over fellow-Detroiter Billy Golembiewski in the championship finale. It was the second PBA championship for the tour's leading money winner in 1964. Strampe captured the PBA National Championship the previous November.
