Johnson Pops Fifth PBA Title

Three big games within four pins of each other in the finals carried Earl Johnson to his fifth Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tournament title in the Madison Open.

Johnson opened his championship run with a 234-222 win over Les Schissler. He then defeated Bob Strampe, 237-183. In the championship game it was Johnson again, 235-213, over Nelson Burton Jr.

At this stage of the season, Burton had quite a record. In the seven tournaments he had entered, the 22-year-old youngster had two seconds, a third and a fourth.
