Welu Is Tops In Mesa-Phoenix

Although saddened by the death of his 69-year-old mother, Big Billy Welu of St. Louis managed to hang on and win the Professional Bowlers Association $21,500 Mesa-Phoenix Open.

Welu was informed of his mother's death after completing his third six-game block in the qualifier. He was leading at the time and his father, insisted that he continue.

Andy Marzich gave the 6-5, 220-pounder plenty of competition before bowing by 152 pins. The final total for the 40-game grind was Welu 9173, Marzich 9021.
